Composition
- Each chewable tablet contains Ascorbic Acid BP and Sodium Ascorbate BP equivalent to Ascorbic Acid BP 250 mg.
Description
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is essential for the synthesis of collagen and intracellular materials. It is involved in important metabolic reactions. Deficiency may arise due to a decrease in absorption or an increase in requirement due to certain physiological conditions such as pregnancy, lactation, post-operative state, growing age, etc. Cevalin can be used to treat vitamin C deficiency and in those conditions, where there is an increased requirement of vitamin C Cevalin is also an antioxidant vitamin.
Indication
Vitamin C deficiency disorders (scurvy and gum disease), pregnancy, lactation, post-operative or other wound healing states, infection, growing age, thyrotoxicosis, and common cold. Being an antioxidant vitamin, it protects against cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, and malignancy and it has been found to delay the aging process. It has been found that in the case of diabetes, there is an increase in the requirement of vitamin C, Cevalin is also indicated in that condition.
Dosage & Administration
- 1-2 tablets to be taken 1-2 times daily or as directed by the physician.
Side Effects
- Ascorbic acid does not seem to have any important adverse effects at dosages less than 4 gm/day. A larger dose may cause diarrhea or the formation of renal calculi of calcium oxalate in patients with renal impairment.
Contraindication & Precaution
This product is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients. Care should be taken in patients who may develop iron overloads, such as those with hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, or red cell aplasia. Iron chelates with tetracycline absorption may be impaired.
Drug Interaction
- Potentially hazardous interactions: Ascorbic Acid is incompatible in solution with aminophylline, bleomycin, erythromycin, lactobionate nafcillin, nitrofurantoin sodium, conjugated estrogen, sodium bicarbonate, sulphafurazole diethanolamine, chloramphenicol sodium succinate, chlorothiazide sodium, and hydrocortisone sodium succinate.
- Useful Interactions: Ascorbic Acid increases the apparent half-life of Paracetamol and enhances Iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
- The drug is safe in normal doses in pregnant women, but a daily intake of 5 gm or more is reported to have caused abortion. The drug may be taken safely during lactation.

- Store below 30oC in a dry place. Keep away from light.
