Composition
- Each film-coated tablet contains Ursodeoxycholic acid BP 300 mg.
Description
UDCA (Ursodeoxycholic acid) is used to reduce the cholesterol saturation of bile & to promote the dissolution of gallstones. The cholesterol saturation of bile is reduced by UDCA (Ursodeoxycholic acid), allowing gradual solubilization of cholesterol gallstones. Cholesterol secretion into bile is reduced & bile acid secretion rate is increased during UDCA (Ursodeoxycholic acid) treatment without a reduction of phospholipids.
Indications
Dissolution of small to medium size radiolucent, cholesterol-rich gallstones in functioning gallbladder, prevention of gallstone formation in obese patients experiencing rapid weight loss, primary biliary cirrhosis.
Dosage & Administrations
- Dissolution of gallstones: 8-12 mg/ kg body weight daily as a single dose to bedtime or in two divided doses, for up to 2 years: treatment should be continued for 3-4 months after stone dissolve.
- Prevention of gallstone formation: 300 mg twice daily.
- Primary biliary Cirrhosis: 10-15 mg/ kg body weight daily in 2-4 divided doses. or as directed by the physician.
Side Effects
- Commonly reported side effects are Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhoea, gallstones calcification, and Pruritus.
Contraindications
Contraindicated for pigmented gallstones, functioning gall bladder, inflammatory diseases & other conditions of the small intestine, colon & liver which interfere with the entire hepatic circulation of bile salts.
Precautions
It should not be used in patients with chronic liver disease peptic ulcer diseases or inflammatory bowel diseases. It is ineffective for the dissolution of calcified & pigmented gallstones.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Therefore this drug should be used during pregnancy if the benefits over the risks. It is not known whether Ursodeoxycholic acid is excreted in human milk. So, caution should be exercised when it is administered to a lactating mother.
Drug interactions
It should not be used with drugs, such as estrogenic hormones, that increase bile cholesterol. Concomitant administration with bile acid-binding drugs including antacids, charcoal & cholestyramine should be avoided.

- Store in a cool & dry place, and protect from light.
