Nuba

Neomycin Sulphate & Bacitracin

Skin ointment

Presentation

  • Nuba ointment 20 gm: Each g ointment contains Neomycin sulphate BP 5 mg and Bacitracin (as zinc salt) BP 500 units.

Description

Nuba ointment is a combination of Neomycin sulphate and Bacitracin zinc. Neomycin is bactericidal. It binds to polysomes and thus inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria. It also causes a misreading of the genetic code of the mRNA template and this causes incorrect protein. Neomycin acts mainly against gram-negative organisms including Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp. It is effective against Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus faecalis, and has some activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Bacitracin is bactericidal and acts by inhibiting the cell wall synthesis in bacteria. It is effective against many gram-positive organisms such as staphylococcus including some penicillin-resistant staphylococci, streptococci, anaerobic cocci, corynebacteria and clostridia. Nuba ointment is useful in mixed infections of the skin and mucous membrane. Neomycin sulphate and Bacitracin zinc together provide broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. Nuba ointment is useful where the moisture-retaining capacity of ointment is desirable and in the treatment of dry infections. The activity of Nuba ointment is not impaired by blood, pus, necrotic tissue or large inocula.

Indication

Nuba ointment is indicated for the treatment of the following bacterial infections:

                a) Impetigo due to group A Streptococci or Staphylococcus aureus

                b) Sycosis barbae due to Staphylococcus aureus

                c) Furunculosis due to Staphylococci

                d) Secondary infected wounds, ulcers and burns

                e)  Eczematoid dermatitis,

                f) Pyogenic dermatitis

                g) Eczema

                h) Neurodermatitis

                i) Anogenital pruritus.

Dosage and Administration

  • Before use, the area for application should be cleaned gently. Debris such as pus or crusts should be removed from the affected area. A thin film of Nuba ointment is applied 2 to 4 times daily.
  • Applications should not exceed 60 gm daily for 3 weeks, and thereafter not be repeated for at least 3 months. In renal impairment reduced dosages should be used because of the reduced plasma clearance of neomycin. It is not recommended for use in neonates.

Contraindication

Nuba ointment is contraindicated in patients who have shown hypersensitivity to any of its components or cross-sensitising agents such as framycetin, kanamycin, gentamicin and other related antibiotics. Application of large amounts, treatment of large areas of chronic wounds or prolonged treatments are contraindicated.

Precaution

It should not be used in the external ear canal if the eardrum is perforated. Because of the potential hazards or nephrotoxicity due to Neomycin, care should be exercised when using this product in treating extensive burns, trophic ulceration and other extensive conditions where absorption of Neomycin is possible. As with any antibiotic preparation, prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms including fungi. Concurrent use of other aminoglycosides is not recommended.
