Moxifloxacin USP 0.5%
Sterile and Pyrogen Free Eye Drops
Composition
- Each ml contains Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride USP equivalent to Moxifloxacin 5 mg. Preservative: Benzalkonium Chloride BP 0.02 mg.
Description
- It is a sterile and pyrogen-free ophthalmic solution containing Moxifloxacin - a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone derivative for topical administration into the eyes.
Clinical Pharmacology
Moxifloxacin is a 4th generation fluorinated quinolone. It is bactericidal with a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. The antimicrobial action of Moxifloxacin results from the inhibition of topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV. DNA gyrase is an essential enzyme that is involved in the replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA. Topoisomerase IV is an enzyme known to play a key role in the partitioning of chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division.
Indications and Uses
Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections including bacterial conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and blepharoconjunctivitis which are due to Moxifloxacin susceptible germs.
Dosage and Administration
- Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times daily for 7 days.
Contraindications
- If anyone has known hypersensitivity to any of the components of the product.
Precautions
As with other anti-infectives, prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If super-infection occurs, discontinue use and introduce alternative therapy. Patients should be advised not to wear contact lenses if they have signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis.
Side Effects
The most frequently reported ocular adverse events were decreased visual acuity, dry eye, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and tearing. These events occurred in approximately 1-6% of patients.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Moxifloxacin has not been measured in human milk, although it can be presumed to be excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when it is administered to a nursing mother.
Drug Interactions
- Studies have not been conducted.
Overdosage
There is practically no risk of adverse effects due to accidental ingestion since a bottle of 5 ml eye drop solution contains only 25 mg Moxifloxacin which is much lower than the recommended daily oral dose. In case of systemic ingestion, irrigation of the stomach may be appropriate in young children to decrease further absorption.
Pharmaceutical Precautions
- Store at room temperature and protect from light and moisture. It is desirable that the contents should not be used more than one month after the first opening of the bottle.
Commercial Pack
- Plastic dropper bottle of 5 ml.
