Mexiderm-F

Fusidic Acid BP & Betamethasone BP

Composition

  • Mexiderm-F 10 gm Cream: Each gram cream contains Fusidic Acid BP 20 mg and betamethasone Valerate BP equivalent to Betamethasone BP 1 mg.

Pharmacology

Mexiderm-F cream combines the potent topical antibacterial action of Fusidic Acid with the anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects of Betamethasone. Betamethasone Valerate is a topical steroid with rapid effect in inflammatory dermatoses. Even refractory conditions can often be treated successfully. When applied topically, Fusidic Acid is effective against Staphylococci, Streptococci, Corynebacteria, Neisseria, and certain Clostridia and Bacteroides. The antibacterial activity of Fusidic Acid is not diminished in the presence of Betamethasone.

Indications

  • Mexiderm-F cream is indicated in inflammatory dermatoses where bacterial infection is present or likely to occur. Inflammatory dermatoses include atopic eczema, discoid eczema, stasis eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, and discoid lupus erythematosus.
  • Dosage and Administration
  • Uncovered lesions: 2-3 times daily applications.
  • Covered lesions: The less frequent application may be adequate.

Contraindications

Topical corticosteroids are contraindicated in viral, tuberculous, and fungal skin infections, perioral dermatitis, acne rosacea, and ulcerative conditions. Also contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to any component.

Adverse effect

With other topical corticosteroids, prolonged and intensive treatment may cause local atrophic changes of the skin, such as striae, thinning, and dilatation of the superficial blood vessels, particularly when the occlusive dressing is used or when skin folds are involved. Systemic absorption, sufficient to produce hypercorticism/adrenal suppression, can occur with prolonged or extensive use, especially when used under occlusion/napkin. Infants and children are particularly at risk.

Precautions

Long-term continuous therapy should be avoided, particularly in the face, flexures, and intertriginous areas, and in infants and children. Caution should be exercised if a topical steroid is used near the eye. Glaucoma might be the result if the preparation enters the eye.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Topical steroids should not be extensively used in pregnancy. As Fusidic Acid has been detected in the breast milk, nursing mothers are advised to use the drug only if clearly needed.

Storage

  • Store in a cool and dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Commercial Pack

  • Mexiderm-F 10 gm cream: Each pack has an aluminum tube containing 10 gm of the cream.
