Description
Betamethasone valerate is a synthetic adrenocorticosteroid. It is a glucocorticoid in nature. It is an analog of prednisolone and has a slight degree of mineralocorticosteroid activity. It is very effective and suitable for dermatological use because it has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive effects. It is absorbed from the skin. Inflammation and/or other disease process in the skin increase percutaneous absorption. Occlusive dressings substantially increase its percutaneous absorption
Indications
Mexiderm preparations are indicated for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatosis i.e. they are indicated for the following diseases:
a) Control of all forms of eczema even in young children
b) Certain forms of psoriasis
c) Severe acute photosensitivity
d) Acute contact dermatitis
e) Idiopathic pruritus of the anogenital area
f) Lichen planus
g) Localized bullous disorders
h) Keloid scarring
i) Pretibial myxedema
j) Vitiligo

Apply a thin film to the affected skin areas one to three times a day or as advised by the physician.

Precautions
It should not be used for a long time, particularly in the case of infants and children. As with other antibacterials, prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. Appropriate measures should be taken if this occurs. The use of steroids in infected areas should be supervised with care as it may encourage the spread of infection. Steroid therapy should be stopped if this occurs and appropriate antibacterials should be used.
