Presentation:
- Etnol 50 mg Tablet: Each tablet contains Atenolol BP 50 mg.
Description:
- Etnol tablet is the preparation of Atenolol. Atenolol is a beta receptor-blocking drug. It is a cardioselective drug and preferentially inhibits beta 1 receptors (located chiefly in the myocardium, kidney, and eye) and produces its effect on the cardiovascular system.
Indication:
Etnol tablet ( Atenolol ) is indicated for
1) The management of hypertension.
2) The management of angina pectoris.
3) The management of cardiac dysrhythmias.
4) The treatment of myocardial infarction: Early and late intervention after myocardial infarction.
Dosage and administration:
- Adult: Adjust dosage for renal impairment. Doses requirement may be reduced in the elderly.
- Hypertension: 50 to 100 mg once daily.
- Angina: Usually 100 mg once daily or 50 mg twice daily.
- Dysrhythmias: Initial dose 2.5 mg IV over 2.5 minutes, can be repeated at 5-minute intervals until response observed to a maximum of 10 mg. Infusion 0.15 mg per kg over 20 minutes may be repeated every 12 hours. Oral maintenance dose 50 to 100 mg once daily.
- Myocardial infarction: Early interventions within 12 hours, 5 to 10 mg slow IV injection (1 mg / Minute ); 50 mg orally about 15 minutes later; then 50 mg orally 12 hours later; then 100 mg once daily commencing 12 hours later.
Late intervention:
- 100 mg daily for long-term prophylaxis of myocardial infarction.
Contraindication:
- Sinus bradycardia; greater than first-degree heart block; cardiogenic shock; overt cardiac failure; hypersensitivity to beta 1 blocking agents.
Precautions:
- Poor cardiac reserve. Avoid overt heart failure, anesthesia, and chronic obstructive airway disease or asthma. Withdrawal of beta-blocking drugs should be gradual in patients with ischemic heart disease. Withdrawal of clonidine.
Use in pregnancy and lactation:
- Atenolol can cross the placenta and cause fetal harm. Although no studies have been performed on this, the possibility of fetal injury can not be excluded. Atenolol should not be given to nursing mothers as it is exerted in breast milk.
Side effects:
- Cold extremities, muscular fatigue, bradycardia, and sleep disturbances are rarely seen. Rashes and dry eyes have been reported with beta-blockers. Consider discontinuance if they occur.
Overdose:
- Gastric lavage and hemodialysis are helpful to remove the drug. Symptomatic treatments are necessary as per requirement.
